OK, some observations... 1. Be honest, you didn't PEDAL jack shit in Peru, you were shuttled EVERYWHERE. That means you put your bike on a van, got DRIVEN up to the trailhead, and then descended on a mtb, then you "nearly died" on the aqueduct section of the Lares trail, a place we take our gravel bikes down. If you want to PEDAL in Peru, you're welcome to join us locals and expats who do pedal from the sacred valley, up to the trailheads to EARN OUR TURNS and use our ENDURO bicycles as they were intended to be used..my gut feeling its you won't make it 1/4 of the way up (and thats ok, the altitudes are a slap in the nuts). 2. You get to decide how much effort and heart rate you put into on a bicycle too, be it a mtb, gravel or road bike, you just need to be able to ride a bicycle and don't even need a computer or Garmin to do so... but people who high five each other in the beer tent after "shredding" some "sick flow, bro" will never understand that. There is no universe where an ebike is better than a road or gravel bike for training, unless you're a complete poser moron who doesn't know what he is doing. fact. Ask Gee Atherton..he admitted in an interview a couple of years ago that at the hight of his DH career in the middle of a race season most of his training time was spent on a road bike. An ebike is only going to give you a false sense of progress about your ability in what you CAN or CAN'T do at any given training zone, making you think you are totally capable of crushing that single track climb that's hella technical and giving you a false sense of your own abilities. SAVE YOUR MONEY and just get a cheap gravel bike, that is legitimately the best training tool you could spend (not a lot of) money on. And lets not forget that insane pace ebikes go through drivetrain, tire and break parts...not in ANY way an affordable option...it is also worth pointing out something you said about levelling off and how your ebike just gives a little extra when you ease off to level off your ride and keep it consistent..well, people who actually ride and pedal bikes consider this type of consistency in output a skill, it is something you learn to do (like with riding technical descents or jumps, or climbing huge climbs on a road bike) and being able to "cheat" out of that means you will never learn a pretty basic and important tool as a cyclist. 3. YES, you do destroy the trails..the reason you do is because you are carrying more weight at greater speed. Take your beloved Peru. we use the same trails as cows, horses and big, heavy pack animals. but pack animals go very slowly so don't do much damage. a rider on a heavy ebike, at high velocity is causing a far greater damage to the trails. We often work on the trails in our part of the Sacred valley and since the introduction of ebikes here, we have witnessed a NOTICEABLE, DRASTIC increase in trail degradation, an increase in the amount of times we have to repair the trails and funnily enough, the DICKHEADS who ride their ebikes up and down the trails (INCREDIBLY dangerous and STUPID) we fix are NEVER available to work on the trails they are destroying. You really can't compare xc racers to ebikes because even if the power output is the same, xc bikes and racers are very light and not capable of descending at the speeds gravity bikes and bikers can, they have limitations there, ebikes and their riders are NOT LIGHT, and here where the trails are either wet as hell or dry as hell, the trails degrade really badly when ebikes plough through them. very DISINGENUOUS comparison. 4. World Cup DH racers DO NOT train on ebikes. they say they do in interviews and at the trailside to people they meet because their bike sponsors want them to for increased ebike sales. But I garuntee you, anyone who doesn't want to sit at the back of the world cup grid drinking IPA's with the has-beens is on a road or gravel bike training properly. If someone gave you a free bike to race as well as training bikes and support, you'd also tell everyone what a great training tool their ebike is so that they could sell more units..isn't that what this whole video is about...? Most pro's despise them, they are paid well to say the love the ebikes their sponsors make. Thats just a sponsorship contract and peer to peer marketing making dad's believe complete bullshit. In this context, you really can't take anything the pro's say seriously because they are paid to say them, they are like dancing monkeys...dance monkey, dance.. and then we, the bicycle buying public are amazed at the incredible dancing monkeys...get it? 5. You don't ride any more on an ebike than on a real bicycle; for some reason the whole pro-golf cart-beer keg-in-their-belly-brigade (ebikers) have made this a talking point. like all the others, it is nonsense. I'm sure it helps ebike sales but its basis in truth is farcical. The amount you ride and the consistency you ride with is all down to training program, personal motivation to progress and your commitment to your improvement, an ebike will not make you more consistent or committed, it's just a bicycle. the ebike dads who are outraged by that statement will, no doubt point to individual day at the park. I doubt that is even true. I don't live near a poser park so wouldn't know but I'll point to my own experiences here in the Sacred valley; the rich, useless poser dads who ride ebikes here load their ebikes onto the back of pickups and vans (like you did) and shuttle them up. they don't do any more laps than I do. I suppose the reality is that here you wouldn't really get any more laps with an ebike anyway and if you did bring your ebike with us on a ride, I'm almost certain the biker would bonk waaaaaay before we did..so mute point. An ebike isn't going to give you more motivation to be more consistent.. that comes from you and to be honest, some of the most diligent, committed, disciplined and consistent riders I know are roadies. 6. If you need any help getting to "high elevations" (car, chairlift, emotor) should you really be there in the first place? earn your turns or don't go. remember the energy required to get you there on a chairlift, or ebike or car represents, in one way or another, the consumption of non renewable energy sources on the energy supply chain, and that means you ARE contributing to climate change. I pedal a 18kg, all aluminium, 180mm enduro monster truck for 5 & 1/2 hours to 4500m to earn my (long and epic) descents. ZERO EMISSIONS. what's your excuse? 7. Ebikes have a place. As city commuters for people looking to make their transit to work more sustainable. For folks with debilitative health problems or mobility issues, or recovering from injuries, SURE. Even cargo ebikes are awesome (I would love a cargo ebike); they are a BRILLIANT application, you can carry heavy loads across short to medium distances. Here in the Sacred valley a cargo ebike would be a dream come true for me and MANY local, small farmers in my area.. So there is a place for this technology. But on mtb's, gravel bikes or road bikes- they don't belong.

E-Bikes are great for #1 Disabled and really old people #2 Commuting There's a reason there is an explosion of e-bikes and more people on bikes these days. Once you remove the "effort" part of it they all come out of the woodwork. Real bicycling is hard which keeps many folks away. E-Biking is great because it allows people to stay overweight, out of shape and keep their bad/unhealthy diet. It takes the effort out and becomes E(Effortless)-biking.

I am a non-e rider.Everything you say is right and plausible. The thing is, it is the rider, not the bike. People with a low amount of discipline will end up with no endurance benefits on an e-bike. In the area of germany were I live most people on an e-bike are runing the bikes at high motor assistance. What makes me mad about e-bikes are not the bikes... I think e-bikes have a good right to exist. Its a special kind of people riding on it. Since e-bikes are a thing I was deride by e-bike riders for, probably not having money for an e-bike. I was laugh at by e-bike riders because I mad a break during a 1800 hm climp in the alps. Bro's I rode with in the past switched to e-bikes and stopped riding with me because "I am to slow in the climbs". I got almost killed because I collided on a dedicated downhill trail with an e-bike rider who was thinking that it is a good idea to ride this trail in revers direction.

Purchased a pedal assist efatbike at 71. we have wonderful groomed fatbike trails, but some challenging climbs that had me maxed out on my analog fatbike. My enjoyment factor went up exponentially and I was riding almost every day as a result. Now 72 and recently purchased a pedal assist FS trail bike for the same reason, and again, riding almost every day. I never use boost except briefly to catch up with a much younger and fitter friend riding an analog trail bike. I ride in Trail mode almost 100%, which closely replicates the analog riding experience. I don't road ride, it's forest trails only for me, and loving it!

Genuinely an honest, thorough review on merits of e-bike. Yes, I rented one in Bentonville and covered more ground in 3 days than I could have on my Polygon Siskiu T7 not only conquering more technical features opening up more trails but also maintaining an even HIGHER HR than I would have on my non e-bike because I was having so much fun going longer and farther. True, the climb grinds that force us to slow down I hadn't even thought about till you pointed it out; they balance the overall experience of just getting out there brings. Good job.

I worked at MTB specialists in Durango. When E bikes came out while I was there. One week end we did a group shop ride. Ed Zink ask me to do the ride on the e Stump jumper to give him some feedback. I was surprised. After I flatted early. jumping into a rocky section. We continued after the repair and we caught back up to the group. Charlie and I ask if it was cool for us to charge ahead to see how the bike preformed. The group said it was okay. To start with Charlie and I rode together a lot. He's 27 I am a spry 54 at the time. We started behind Purgatory on the Hermosa creek trail. There are a few gnarly climbs that we rode regularly. That is when I saw the benefit. Usually Charlie would wait for me at the top of a climb if it was difficult. On this bike I was able to climb on his rear tire with no issue. We rode together, while I was still putting in effort, but together. On one climb Charlie momentarily lost traction and I was able to slip by because I light pedaled and un wieighted to make it over the root. Make no mistake. I still had to work and could feel the effort afterwords. Because the bike is heavy. In the flats because I ran it at lower output out of respect to Charlie, it was a lot to stay close as we charged on. The one thing that bothered me. The battery was clunking every downhill. We ended up putting a couple of our energy bar wrappers under it to reduce the noise. It never completely went away. We did get it fixed and that was the Demo bike. For the shop.

Theres no way a heavier bike, with more nobbly tyres, doing more laps, doesnt wear the trail more. Come on. Also, wearing through tyres, drivetrains and brake pads faster, where do you think those particles go? And... Where do you think the batteries come from? That might not be an issue for your local forest though...

Greta video and certainly representative of my thought about ebikes. I ride Ebike and non ebike. Half of all of my riding is done in ECO with the Torque and Assistance levels turned down even further. I only use Turbo on flat or undulating descents to help flow. This ensures that 1) i get a really good workout (average HR130-140bpm). 2) It levels up with my riding buddy on an SL. 3) towards the end of a 2-3 hour ride im pretty fried so I can always treat myself to a higher setting to get me home. and 4) while my heart rate isn't much different to the analogue bike i do find that i am not as fatigued for the rest of the day. I assume this is due reduced "maximum efforts" on the ebike. I still love my analogue bike for the Park days and going out with my young son but if i had to choose one it would be an ebike.

My ebikes friends cant keep up with me on bikeparks. Their fitness is just went downhill... thats the danger on fitness because they just ride 20km and less 1k elevation.

These are different bikes, why not get a bike that you can put both wheels on, those bikes are not the same

So I’ve been on quite a few e-bikes but I still think Analog bike descend better.

The premise that an e-bike is the best training tool is laughable. If this were the case, UCI XC and Road racers would be using e-bikes as their primary training tool.

I'm 71 and not at all interested in mountain biking (because you guys are nuts). I just like leisurely cruises along rail-trails and paved back roads. When I got my ebike I thought I would always be "cheating" by using the throttle all the time. As it turned out I find that I usually just use it for steeper hills and for quickly getting through intersections from a stop. I also tend to stick to lower levels of pedal assist than I had anticipated.

Great content! I’d add one more pro: more people on bikes (of all types) is a good thing. More bikers means more trails, more industry to support (retail and service), more bike lanes, better safety/laws, and (theoretically) more innovation and better prices. Love or hate e-bikes, it’s getting more people out riding. Being part of a growing sport is exciting (ask a golfer about contracting sports). Hardtail, full squish, park, bmx, e-bike, cruiser, commuter, or whatever your flavour, there’s a bike for many tastes. We gotta embrace people in our biking communities rather than drawing lines.

E bikes are a crutch. If you need a crutch, have at it. If you don’t and you are just lazy or weak minded, you’ll never know suffering like you would on a real bike.

Personal preference I guess… my favorite part for MTB is actually the pedaling part & going fast on flats + climbing. I’m used to super light short travel XC bike you can bunny hop on command, throw around on corners & it doesn’t seem like I can do that on anything over 30lb let alone 40lb+ tank. If there’s an option to make some of the sketchy terrain disappear right in front of me to save me from dying I’d be all over it but pedaling assistance… no thank you

+1 transmission is pretty much required on an ebike. on regular yeh no. i also like my light ebike and dont run it at max power, or only if i really need it / tired that day, or on the road to the trail indeed. basically, lots of agreements on things people never mention in reviews and what not.
